Need some vegan protein for a quick lunch, dinner, or snack? Try my Easy Homemade White Bean Hummus Recipe! It’s super simple. You don’t even need a food processor or blender; you can literally just mash it up with a fork.

Another great thing about this recipe is that it’s super economical. Many of the ingredients are items I keep in my pantry all the time, so I don’t usually have to buy that many extra ingredients for it.

Ingredients – White Bean Hummus

White beans – Cannellini, Great White Northern Beans, or chickpeas will work for white bean hummus.

Garlic – A few cloves of fresh garlic really punch up the flavor.

Olive oil – You’re going to roast the beans and garlic for a bit with some olive oil to soften and make everything mashable.

Lemon or lime juice – You’ll need some lemon or lime juice for more liquid to make the hummus mashable and to add a burst of citrusy flavor.

Tahini – For that nice, creamy texture, add some tahini.

Spices – Cumin, coriander, paprika, and salt for a bit more flavor.

How to Make Homemade White Bean Hummus

You can make white bean hummus using any kind of white bean – cannellini, Great White Northern, chickpeas (garbanzo beans). It all works. And you can use lemon or lime juice. While I typically use lemon juice, I only had lime juice this time, so I tried it and I loved it! Either works.

So the first step is to open the can of beans and drain and rinse them in a colander. Dump them out over a baking sheet and pour a tablespoon of olive over them. Toss with a spatula. Get out your garlic and chop off the top of the bulb. (Or you can peel the garlic, taking out just three cloves for the hummus.) Pour about a tablespoon or so of olive oil over the garlic. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roast the beans and garlic for 10 minutes, then take them out of the oven, transfer them to a large bowl, and start mashing them with a fork.

Add four tablespoons tahini and three tablespoons of lemon or lime juice and continue mashing. If it’s hard to mash, you can add more olive oil as needed. Then, add the spices and continue mashing until everything is combined.

Serving Suggestions

White bean hummus goes great with pita bread and salad. I made a simple side salad with romaine, plum tomatoes, and feta cheese and paired it with this balsamic dressing from the Love & Lemons food blog. If you’re vegan, you could substitute a vegan cheese or nuts instead of feta cheese for this salad.

This makes for a delicious, well-balanced, cost-effective meal. I was really pleased with how this turned out and I was able to get protein from the hummus and feta cheese, carbs from the pita bread, and healthy veggies in the salad. Check, check and check!
