Ingredients – Pita Bread
Bread flour – You can use bread flour or all purpose flour. I used bread flour.
Dry active yeast – To make the dough rise, you need dry active yeast.
Salt & sugar – Just a tad of salt and sugar to enhance the taste.
Olive oil – Create the perfect consistency with olive oil.
Water – Lukewarm water for the liquid.
How to Make Homemade Pita Bread
You can make homemade pita bread with dry active yeast or instant yeast. However, if you use dry active yeast like I do, you are going to have to budget in a little over an hour for the two different rising periods.
In a large, oven-safe bowl, combine the lukewarm water and active dry yeast. Whisk with a fork and wait about 15 minutes for the mixture to appear frothy. Add salt, sugar, olive oil, and 2 1/2 cups of the flour and whisk together to form the dough. Dust the dough with the remaining 1/4 cup flour and knead it to smooth everything out.
Place the dough back in the oven-safe bowl, cover with aluminum foil. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees, turn it off, then put the bowl in the oven for about 15 minutes. Take the dough out of the oven and knead it again, then put it back in the bowl, cover with foil again, preheat the oven to 200 degrees, turn it off, and stick it back in the oven for an hour. Take the dough out of the oven, separate it into seven or eight little balls, then use a rolling pin to roll each ball out into a flat circle and lay them out over sprayed or oiled baking sheets.
Preheat the oven to 475 degrees and bake the pitas for two minutes on one side and one minute on the other. Toast the pitas in the toaster before serving.
Tip for Serving
Before you serve the pita bread, toast each piece in the toaster. I like to stick it in one way and then when it pops up, put it back in the toaster the other way. You should see some lightly brown spots on the pita bread and it should be toasty when you serve it.
