What is a leveling tool?

The espresso leveler’s job is to level out your coffee before you tamp down to help reduce having areas of high compression and low compression, which can lead to espresso channeling.

What is espresso channeling?

Simply put, when pulling a shot of espresso, channeling is when water finds the path of least resistance and doesn’t flow through the entire coffee bed evenly, which will lead to unbalanced flavors in your final shot.

How To Use Your Leveling Tool

How to use toolHow to use tool

Measure the perfect amount of ground coffee and place in your porta filter, ¼ ounce for a single, and ½ ounce for a double. Tap the sides of your porta filter gently to evenly distribute the coffee.Place your Motta leveling tool inside the porta filter basket, being sure that leveling tool sits against the basket of the porta filter.Depending on the amount of coffee used. you may have to adjust the depth of the leveling tool by rotating the top half of the leveling tool.Once you have the correct size and depth, turn the leveling tool inside the porta filter basket clockwise 2-4 rotations to evenly distribute the coffee grounds. You will now have a flat bed to tamp your espresso. After tamping, wipe away any grinds that have fallen on the portafilter and basket rim.Your are now ready to place your tamper into your machine and brew the perfect shot of espresso!!

Precautions

To make sure you get the best results, you should always make sure your leveling tool is clean. To do that, give it a swift brush after each use or wash it under warm water. NEVER PLACE YOUR LEVELING TOOL IN THE DISHWASHER!!

58.5 mm flat base is made of 18/10 stainless steel.
