No pre-frying required, this Crockpot Honey Garlic Chicken is so simple to prepare. Just chop the chicken, mix the sauce ingredients together then cook together in the slow cooker until the chicken is tender. Served with the perfect amount of honey garlic sauce to soak into your rice.
I have a couple of variations of Honey Garlic Chicken on my website already – with the OG honey garlic chicken and Baked honey garlic chicken (it’s one of my favourite fakeaway recipes if you couldn’t tell 😋), but I realised I didn’t have a slow cooker version!
Why do we need a slow cooker version?
- It makes things a lot easier – prepping in the morning then going about your day and having a delicious meal all ready by dinnertime.
- It helps on those days when we’re all home at different times. Everyone can grab their portion out of the slow cooker when they’re home.
- Of course it saves on the washing up too!
📋 Ingredients
Chicken Thighs – I use chicken thigh fillets in this recipe because it withstands long cooking times perfectly – resulting in tender and juicy meat. Plus it absorbs all the flavour from the sauce during the long cooking time!
Rice Vinegar – If you can’t get your hands on this you can substitute it for apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar.
Seasoning – Use a blend of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
How to make it:
***Full recipe with detailed steps in the recipe card at the end of this post***
- Mix the cornflour, seasonings, rice vinegar, sesame oil, dark soy sauce and garlic in a bowl. Then stir in the stock, butter, and honey.
- Combine it with the chicken in the crock pot, then place a lid on it and cook on high for 3 – 4 hours or low for 5 – 6 hours.
- Serve over rice and topped with sesame seeds and chopped spring onions (scallions).
Pro Tip
It might not look light a lot of liquid when it first goes into the slow cooker – but don’t add more. The chicken will release juices too – resulting in plenty of flavourful sauce that thickens nicely (due to the cornflour we add at the beginning).
A wonderfully rich fakeaway recipe!

-
Add the chicken into the slow cooker.
1 kg (2.2lbs) skinless boneless chicken thigh fillets
-
In a bowl mix together the cornflour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, rice vinegar, sesame oil, dark soy sauce and garlic. Mix until well combined and all the cornflour is fully absorbed.
2 tbsp cornflour, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp paprika, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, 4 cloves of garlic peeled and minced
-
Stir in the stock, butter and honey (don’t worry about lumps of butter, they’ll melt as it cooks).
120 ml (1/2 cup) chicken stock, 2 tbsp unsalted butter, 165 ml (1/2 cup) honey
-
Pour the honey garlic sauce mixture over the chicken and stir together.
-
Place a lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 5-6 hours. If you get the chance, stir once in the last hour or two of cooking, this helps to mix the sauce together so it combines nicely. Don’t worry if you don’t get the chances, simply mix it at the end of cooking.
